Auntie M’s Advocacy Project

A space for stories of resilience, healing, and truth.

Here, voices often overlooked can be heard.

TOOLS I USE

These are tools I use to stay grounded when life becomes overwhelming. They are not perfect solutions, and they may not work for everyone. Healing is not a straight line, and every person’s journey looks different. These are simply practices that help me stay present, process difficult emotions, and keep moving forward.

CONNECTION

Healing does not happen in isolation. While time alone can help with reflection, meaningful connections with others remind us that we are not alone in our struggles. The people we trust can help us stay grounded, provide perspective, and offer support when life feels overwhelming.

Group Therapy

Group therapy helps me remember that I am not alone in what I am experiencing. Listening to others share their stories creates understanding and compassion, both for them and for myself. It reminds me that healing is something many people are working toward, even when it feels difficult or slow.

Friends

Trusted friends provide connection, laughter, and emotional support. Sometimes they offer advice or perspective, but often the most important thing they give is simply their presence. Talking with someone who cares about you can make overwhelming problems feel more manageable and remind you that you are not facing life alone.

Friendship also helps restore a sense of normalcy. Spending time with people who see you as a whole person, not just someone going through a hard time, can be incredibly grounding.

CREATIVE PROCESSING

Creative expression helps me process emotions that are too big or complex for words alone. Creativity allows feelings to move through me instead of staying trapped inside.

Art

Creating art helps me work through emotions that are difficult to explain. Sometimes feelings come out through color, shape, or imagery before I can fully understand them. Art gives those emotions a place to exist safely.

Journaling

Journaling allows me to put thoughts and feelings onto paper so they are no longer spinning endlessly in my mind. Writing things down helps clarify what I’m feeling, what I need, and how I want to respond to situations in my life.

Creative Writing

Creative writing gives me the freedom to explore emotions and experiences through storytelling and imagination. Sometimes writing creatively allows me to understand deeper truths about my experiences that are difficult to face directly.

Music

Music helps regulate emotions and shift my mood when I feel overwhelmed. Sometimes music helps me release emotions that I cannot express with words, and sometimes it simply helps create a moment of calm.

Reading

Reading allows my mind to slow down and focus. Books provide perspective, knowledge, and sometimes a temporary escape that helps restore emotional balance.

NERVOUS SYSTEM REGULATION

Stress and trauma do not only affect the mind; they live in the body as well. Movement and physical activity help release tension, regulate emotions, and restore balance.

Yoga

Yoga helps calm my nervous system and reconnect my body with my breathing. It slows racing thoughts and creates space for relaxation and reflection.

Exercise

Exercise releases built-up stress and anxious energy. Physical activity helps my body process tension and reminds me that I am strong and capable.

Walking

Walking gives my mind space to breathe. Being in motion, especially outside, can help clear mental fog and reduce anxiety while giving my thoughts room to settle.

Stretching

Stretching helps release physical tension that builds up in the body during stressful moments. Even simple stretching can help the body relax and reset.

CHANNELING ANXIETY INTO PURPOSE

When anxiety builds up, focusing that energy into something meaningful can transform it into forward movement instead of letting it spiral.

Advocacy Work

When my mind becomes overwhelmed with anxious energy, I focus on my advocacy project. Writing, organizing ideas, and creating resources helps transform difficult experiences into something that may help others. Turning pain into purpose gives those experiences meaning instead of letting them define me.

RESTORING ORDER

When life feels chaotic, restoring order in my environment can help restore calm inside my mind.

Cleaning and Organizing

Cleaning helps me regain a sense of control when things feel overwhelming. Creating order in my home environment often helps quiet the mental noise and stress that builds up during difficult times.

LOVE AND CARE

Some of the most powerful forms of healing come from love, connection, and caring for others.

Spending Time With My Son

Snuggling my son, keeping him safe, and being present in his life reminds me why I keep moving forward. Creating a home where he feels safe, loved, and supported helps ground me in what truly matters.

Animals

Animals provide unconditional companionship and comfort. Caring for them and spending time with them can bring calm, joy, and emotional connection during difficult moments.

A GENTLE REMINDER

Some days these tools work beautifully. Other days they barely help at all. Healing is not about perfection; it is about continuing to try, continuing to learn, and continuing to move forward one step at a time.

If any of these tools help someone else feel a little more steady, then sharing them has been worth it.
